Maj. Charles Shaler served as acting Chief of Ordnance, 29 March to 5 April 1899, upon the death of Brig. Gen. Flagler until Brig. Gen. Adelbert Rinaldo Buffington could assume the position of Chief of Ordnance.

Col. Rogers Birnie served as acting Chief of Ordnance while Brig. Gen. William Crozier served as President of the Army War College during the 1912-1913 academic year.
