Master Sergeant Hugh E.
Martin was born in 1903 and enlisted in the Regular Army on October 15, 1925, beginning an Ordnance career which
was to last until his retirement from active duty nearly 25 years later – on March 31, 1950.
While assigned to the Publications Section of the U.S. Army Ordnance Center in 1940, he developed the idea for a
technical magazine to be published by the Center which would be specifically geared for the assistance of Ordnance
sergeants in the field.
His idea was accepted and the first issue of the "Ordnance Sergeant" was published in January 1941. Publication
continued on a monthly basis through October 1945. Because of the timely beneficial value of the “Ordnance
Sergeant,” he was awarded the Legion of Merit for his role as creator and editor.
Master Sergeant Martin died on August 4, 1959.
