Chief Warrant Officer Five Bernard L. SatterfieldCW5 Bernard (Bernie) Lawrence Satterfield was born on January 4, 1954 in Reidsville, North Carolina and enlisted in the U.S. Army in September 1973. After Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, he began his Army career as a Wheel Vehicle Mechanic in Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) 63B with the 519th Military Intelligence Battalion.

Following an assignment in 1975 as a mechanic for C Company, 97th Signal Battalion, Central Army Group (CENTAG) in Manheim, Germany, he reenlisted and transferred to Track Vehicle Maintenance (MOS63C) with a follow-on assignment as a Mechanical Maintenance Non-Commissioned Officer as the Shop Foreman while assigned to the 2d Battalion, 70th Armor at Fort Stewart, Georgia.

After returning to Germany for an assignment with the 503rd Combat Support Engineering Company maintaining engineer construction equipment, CW5 Satterfield reported to the U.S. Army Ordnance Center and School for instructor duty in 1982.

Because of his demonstrated abilities of leadership, managerial skills and technical capabilities he applied for and was appointed as a Warrant Officer in the Ordnance Corps on August 29, 1984.

His first warrant officer assignment was with the Sergeant York Test Battery at Fort Bliss, Texas in 1986, where he served as Battery Maintenance Technician. Extensive test operations in North White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico and the U.S. Army Experimental Test Command, Fort Hunter Leggett, California required split operations for continuous maintenance support at both locations.

Next, he reported to the 233d Transportation Company (Heavy Equipment Transport), 70th Ordnance Battalion, Fort Bliss, Texas, as the Unit Maintenance Technician, where the unit competed in the U.S. Army Award for Maintenance Excellence (AAME) and was runner up at the Department of the Army level in the heavy category.

In 1987, CW5 Satterfield served in the Republic of Panama with the 1/228th Aviation Regiment as Battalion Maintenance Officer. During this assignment, the unit was the U.S. Army South (USASRO) Major Command (MACOM) winner in the AAME competition.

He then reported to Fort Bragg, North Carolina to serve with the 37th Engineer Battalion, (Combat) (Airborne), 20th Engineer Brigade as Intermediate Direct Support Platoon Shop Officer in 1990. CW5 Satterfield was chosen to deploy with the advance party supporting Operation Desert Shield/Storm.

Next, he served in South Korea as the Maintenance Officer, 4th Chemical Company, 2d Infantry Division, where his unit competed in the U.S. Army AAME competition and won the Eighth Army light category.

Returning to Fort Bragg in 1995, CW5 Satterfield was assigned to the 1st Corps Support Command (COSCOM) as Direct Support Maintenance Officer to the 503d Maintenance Company. In 1998, he traveled to Camp Doha, Kuwait as the Contracting Officer Representative (COR) assigned to U.S. Army Central Command, (ARCENT), overseeing the maintenance of the U.S. Army Preposition Stock (APS-5), where he provided contract oversight and compliance by planning a thorough quality assurance surveillance program.

Returning to Fort Bragg, North Carolina in 1999, he served as the Maintenance Officer for the 1st Brigade, 78th Division. Following this, he remained at Fort Bragg and served with the United States Army Special Operations Command, Office of the Inspector General.

After an assignment in South Korea as the Senior Maintenance Advisor, for the 2nd ID Division Support Command at Camp Casey in 2004, CW5 Satterfield was assigned to XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg as the G4 Maintenance Readiness Officer in 2005.

Assigned to the 1st Sustainment Command (Theater) in 2007 as the Senior Ordnance Logistics Officer deployed to Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, CW5 Satterfield supported ARCENT in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Enduring Freedom (OEF). Following this assignment, CW5 Satterfield remained in Iraq as the Brigade Logistic Support Team Chief (BLST) supporting the 1/82d Advise and Assist Brigade (AAB) deployed to Al Asad Air Base.

CW5 Satterfield culminated his Army career as the 7th Regimental Chief Warrant Officer for the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps from 2009 to 2012, and had the distinct honor of mentoring thousands of Ordnance Warrant Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers applying to become an Ordnance Warrant Officers. During his tenure, accession requirements were meet for all Ordnance Warrant Officer MOSs for FY 2011 and 2012. This was accomplished by aggressive campaigning through his visits to camps, posts, and stations meeting face-to-face with Ordnance Warrant Officers and prospective Non-Commissioned Officers. Under his leadership, he tripled the number of opportunities in the Training with Industry program to ensure every Warrant Officer MOS had an opportunity to participate in the program.

In 2012, CW5 reported for his last assignment as a Staff Logistician with Forces Command (FORSCOM) at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

CW5 Satterfield retired on September 1, 2013.
