Colonel Redding Hobby was born on May 20, 1951 in Tifton, Georgia and graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1973.
Following a career of ever increasing responsibility, Colonel Hobby assumed command of the 801st Main Support Battalion in 1991. During his tenure, he converted the maintenance battalion into a Main Support Battalion consisting of seven diverse functional logistics companies. The Commanding General of the 101st Airborne Division stated, "Soldiers thrive and are developed into positions of leadership under Colonel Hobby, he is the best Battalion Commander in DISCOM, the very best I have ever seen, and one of my top three battalion commanders in the division."
Following his tour as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics for the 101st Airborne Division, he assumed command of the 20th Area Support Group in Korea in 1996. In September of 1997, he was awarded the Army Community of Excellence Award. As well, in 1998, he was awarded the Philip A. Connelly Award, Best Dining Facility, United States Army and Best Commissary, United States Army.
After his two-year assignment as the Chief of Staff of 19th Theater Support Command, he assumed command of U.S. Army Material Command – Far East in 2000.He facilitated readiness and responsiveness achieving the highest readiness rates in four years.
Colonel Hobby culminated his Army career as the Chief of Staff for U.S. Army Operations Support Command in 2001. He led a team of over 400 personnel to coordinate and manage over 28 ammunition plants, storage depots, and arsenals in 35 states and seven foreign countries.
