Colonel Kevin Smith was born on November 6, 1954 in Saint Louis, Missouri. He graduated in 1977 from Creighton University as an ROTC Distinguished Military graduate. After completing his Masters Degree at Saint Louis University in 1979, he began his active duty career.
In 2001, Colonel Smith assumed command of the U.S. Army Materiel Support Center – Korea. As the commander for the only industrial facility in theater, he led a workforce of over 1200 civilians and military personnel that conducted supply and maintenance operations while managing the theater ammunition stocks valued at over $2.9 billion.
Following his assignment as the Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff at the U.S. Army Ordnance Center and Schools, Colonel Smith deployed in March 2006 as the Deputy Chief of Staff – Support for the Iraq Assistance Group and Commandant for the Phoenix Academy. He led the effort in assisting and equipping the 200 multi-component embedded transition teams, totaling over 2500 personnel and over $380 million worth of equipment.
In July 2007, Colonel Smith culminated his Army career as the Deputy Commander for Training at the U.S. Army Combined Arms Support Command with overall responsibility for the training enterprise of the Ordnance, Quartermaster, and Transportation schools. In addition, he coordinated the Command Post Exercise – Sustainment exercise to train theater level sustainment units. Four Expeditionary Sustainment Commands successfully prepared to support combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. During each exercise, Colonel Smith oversaw the battle staff synchronization across the entire spectrum of operations within the theater to ensure trained units underwent a realistic and rigorous training.
