Major General Yves. J. Fontaine

Major General Yves. J. Fontaine was born in La Louviere, Belgium, and graduated from La Salle University in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management. He completed the ROTC program at the university and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Ordnance Corps.

In his 36-year career of ever increasing responsibility, Major General Fontaine held command assignments at every level; including, ‘F’ Company, 704th Maintenance Battalion in 1980; 82nd Forward Support Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division in 1994; Special Operations Support Command in 1999; and Commander, 1st Corps Support Command in 2003, during which time he was promoted to Brigadier General.

In 2008, Major General Fontaine was selected to be the Commander, 21st Theater Sustainment Command for U.S. Army Europe. During his tenure, he transformed the command through a combination of organizational, cultural, and physical training into a unit with a focus on expeditionary support to operations throughout Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. In 2009, the 21st Theater Command had 33 units and 25 individual augmentees deployed in support of operations in Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He streamlined the Left Behind Equipment (LBE) for U.S. Army Europe by consolidating the multiple LBE sites into two major hubs which streamlined operations and reduced storage and maintenance costs.

Major General Fontaine culminated his Army career with his appointment as Commander of U.S. Army Sustainment Command from 2009 to 2011. During his tenure, he led a global organization responsible for providing front-line logistics support to combat units around the world through its Army Field Support Brigades and Battalions, Logistic Readiness Centers, and its Logistics Civilian Augmentation Program.
