Specialist Samuel Rae Crockett

Specialist Samuel Rae CrockettIn October 2013, then Specialist Samuel Rae Crockett distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his own life beyond the call of duty in action with an armed enemy in Kandahar City, Afghanistan.

As an EOD Technician in a Quick Reaction Force, SPC Crockett was called to assist on an objective with 20 other teammates. Upon assaulting the objective, there were many improvised explosions initiated through suicide vests and pressure plate devices that led to the casualties of a vast majority of the team.

Upon entering the objective, SPC Crockett immediately began clearing paths within an area believed to contain mines and other improvised explosive devices. He also, without guidance or regard for his own personal safety, began diligently working to recover his wounded teammates and the remains of the fallen. He continued to do so even after accidentally detonating a low-grade pressure plate from which he recovered and continued the mission.

He repeatedly acted with the upmost courage to recover 14 total personnel in two hours, after 12 detonations, all while maneuvering in an extremely dangerous environment. His commitment to never leaving a fallen comrade displayed his strength, bravery, and dedication to service and duty to his country.

CW2 Crockett’s awards include the Distinguished Service Cross, Bronze Star w/ “V” Device, Joint Service Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal, and Explosive Ordnance Disposal Badge.

CW2 Crockett continues to serve on active duty.
