Upon
graduation from OCS in 1991 then Second Lieutenant Whitson was assigned to Bravo Company, 101st Support
Battalion, 1st Infantry Division where he assumed the position of automotive and armament platoon leader.
During this time, he ensured that the Divisions 1st Brigade maintained a 95% Operational readiness during
combat operations, the highest in VII Corps during combat operations.
As a result of his superior performance Second Lieutenant (R) Whitson was then selected to serve as aide-de-camp to the 1st Infantry Division Assistant Division Commander for Support, ADC(S) for both, now retired, Major General Morris Boyd and Lieutenant General John Sylvester.
During his Company Command tenure, his training, experience, and leadership proved invaluable to the readiness of the Divisions 3rd Brigade Combat Team. Then Captain Whitson was lauded as not only the best officer in the Battalion but also in the Division Support Command (DISCOM) by then Commander, COL John Broderick.
Lieutenant Colonel Whitson was then selected to command the 801st Brigade Support Battalion (BSB), 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) where he led the Battalion during an Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) Afghanistan deployment. His Brigade Commander at the time, Colonel John Johnson, cited Lieutenant Colonel Whitson as a "Phenomenal Combat Commander" and simply "best of the best" Ordnance officers.
Following his service in the 101st Airborne Division, Colonel Whitson was selected to command the 43rd Sustainment Brigade where he "excelled providing uninterrupted logistics support to Joint Task Force-Carson in a severely fiscally constrained environment" according to the Fort Carson Senior Commander at the time, Brigadier General Michael Bills.
COL (R) Whitson completed his illustrious Ordnance officer career as the AMC Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff. In this capacity, he assisted the planning, execution, policy, operations, procedures, and special projects impacting the AMC headquarters staff and diverse workforce of over 60,000 personnel. The Army Materiel Command Deputy Chief of Staff, then Major General Daly, cited Colonel Whitson as the best Colonel he has ever worked with in 28 years and "one of the finest warrior-logisticians" in our Army today "who leads from the front and serves as a tremendous role model" to all Ordnance Soldiers.
Colonel Whitson’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit (1OLC), Bronze Star (1OLC), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (3OLC), and many others.
Colonel Whitson retired on 31 July 2016.
